Scientists are testing “terramation,” an eco-friendly alternative to burial and cremation

In France, burial and cremation are currently the only two legal practices. By 2026, nearly one in two French people will choose cremation, drawn to its affordability and simplicity. But both practices are equally costly and polluting. Researchers at the CNRS are exploring another possibility: terramation, or the art of returning to the earth what it has given us. A groundbreaking experiment conducted in the Paris region could very well change the way we view death.
